9-year-old driver, young sister crash into semi truck after stealing parents’ car keys

WEST VALLEY, Utah – A 9-year-old girl and her 4-year-old sister from survived after crashing into a semi truck on the highway Wednesday morning, according to the West Valley City Police Department.

The children allegedly snuck their parents car keys while they were asleep and headed to California because they wanted to “swim in the ocean,” police said. The girls drove 10 miles from their home in West Jordan, Utah by highway and freeway before exiting off, hopping a median and slamming head-on into a semi truck.

The car suffered serious damage and the semi truck had to be towed away. Police bodycam footage shows deputies tending to the little girls at the scene of the crash.

Neither of the girls or the truck driver were injured in the crash — police said the children didn’t forget to wear their seatbelts on the impromptu trip.

West Jordan is located more than 700 miles from a California beach.
