Cape Coral doctor offers medical marijuana discount as COVID-19 vaccine incentive

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Businesses around the US are offering people incentives to get the COVID-19 vaccine, and the marijuana business is not excluded.

One business in Cape Coral is copying the model in hopes of getting more people around Southwest Florida vaccinated.

Companies like Krispy Kreme and brands like Samuel Adams have offered their products for free or at a discount, so Dr. Barton Hershfield decided he would try the same thing.

“We wanted to help get things back to normal safely,” said Hershfield.

Dr. Hershfield works at the Medical Cannabis Physicians of Southwest Florida on Del Prado Blvd in Cape Coral. His office is offering a $50 discount to anyone hoping to obtain their medical marijuana card for the first time and $25 off to anyone recertifying their card to anyone who has at least one shot of a vaccine.

“We hope our offer will help them decide to get a vaccine,” said Hershfield.

The White House has said they want 70% of adults in America vaccinated by July 4th in hopes of reaching herd immunity.

As the rate of adults continuing to be vaccinated stays stagnant, Hershfield hopes this makes a difference to some of his patients, and patients across the country who are vulnerable to COVID-19.

“We’ve had to do the masks and the social distancing, which no one has liked. Now, we have a much better solution and that’s immunization,” said Dr. Hershfield.

He hopes this incentive will spur more local businesses to follow suit in hopes of getting our area and Country to herd immunity.
