Celebrity defense attorney F. Lee Bailey, who defended O.J. Simpson, died at 87

CNN— F. Lee Bailey, a prominent celebrity defense attorney, died on Thursday at age 87.

Bailey famously defended O.J. Simpson. He was part of the “dream team” of famous lawyers and attorneys who defended Simpson at his 1995 Murder Trial. Simpson was acquitted of killing Nicole Brown Simpson, his former wife, and waiter Ronald Goldman in 1994, as reported by CNN.

Bailey also notably defended Army Capt. Ernest Medina against charges related to the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War.

He was one of the first defense attorneys to use press conferences as a tool during his cases.

Massachusetts Superior Court Judge Kenneth J. Fishman said Bailey pioneered a style of cross-examination that eschewed using notes and prepared questions, and emphasized working off of a witness’ reactions and testimony.

“F. Lee Bailey had a different approach than was typical at the time,” Fishman said, adding that Bailey had an “incredible, almost scary memory.”

Fishman worked for Bailey as a young law student in 1975, and stayed in practice with him for nearly 27 years.
