City of Cape Coral discussing plan to prevent blue-green algae in waterways

CAPE CORAL, Fla.– The City of Cape Coral is continuing to work on preventing blue-green algae in Cape Coral waterways.

The City’s plan will reactivate the bubble curtain in the Mandolin Canal, adding additional bubble curtains in priority canals. The estimated cost for the 10 bubble curtains would be around $750,000.

“Our whole goal here is to be proactive to try and get ahead of the algae and try and prevent the algae as best as possible,” said Cape Coral Assistant Public Works Director Michael Ilczyszyn.

Ilczyszyn said between building, shipping and setting up, it could take up to six weeks to get the bubble curtains installed.

In order to get the bubble curtains, they have to follow a specific process and the City Council will have to approve them.

The City Council will hold a special meeting to discuss how to move forward on June 9 at 3 p.m
