Clean up begins in wake of massive Golden Gate Estates brush fire

GOLDEN GATE ESTATES, Fla. — Families on 14th Avenue are picking up the pieces after a major fire in Golden Gate Estates over the weekend.

“We’re working on monitoring and mopping up,” Melinda Avni from the Florida Forest Service said. “So, if we see a hot spot, we see excessive smoldering, there will be some little bits of smoke here and there.”

Fire officials are monitoring for potential sparks as dry conditions continue.

“Because we have these dry conditions, we have excessive humidity, we have warm temperatures, we may or may not see a change in the winds we currently have,” Avni said.

Neighbors in the area are calling for more fire hydrants after the burn.

Many homes on 14th Avenue were not damaged, but families said structures and vehicles in their yards were damaged by flames.

FFS officials said two homes in the Golden Gate Estates area were a complete loss and two others were damaged in the Blaze.

Crews have since gotten the flames 75% contained and continue to work to stop the blaze.
