Closed Charlotte County hockey rink may reopen after two years

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. – Kids in Charlotte County have been shut out of a park rink for two years. Now thanks to one organization, the county is going to fix and reopen the amenity.

The locks have kept kids away from the multi-purpose rink at Tringali Park in Englewood for more than two years. The county thought they needed to demo the rink and rebuild it for $1.5 million. In reality, the fix is only estimated to be $50k.

Robert Kruzel and the Tringali Sports League are pushing to get the rink fixed.

They were willing to pay for the $50,000 fix themselves but the county commissioners said no need.

“The county wanted to rebuild it themselves. Have it fixed themselves. They said it was a county park, it’s a county issue and the county should take care of it,” Kruzel said.

The issue lies with resurfacing the rink. Kruzel said crews could either grind down the existing surface or add a four-inch slab.

The county is telling Kruzel the timeline is roughly 2-3 months to get this fixed. However, he said with rainy season nearly here he’s estimating 6-7 months before taking the locks off for good.
