Edison & Ford Winter Estates propose pedestrian safety measures for McGregor Blvd

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Edison and Ford Winter Estates sent a 17-page letter to the City of Fort Myers to keep pedestrians safe while crossing McGregor Blvd.

“The Edison has requested several issues to be considered. The most prominent is probably speeding,” said Mayor Kevin Anderson.

The main concern is drivers going over the speed limit and not obeying the signs outside the Estates.

“We wrote an extensive letter to the city because they are repairing and doing roadwork on McGregor Blvd. The things we’ve listed have been going on for many years,” said Mike Flanders, CEO of the Estates. “The speed is much too fast for the area where we have our pedestrian crossing. We want to make sure that there’s some way to calm the speed and the improvements that are gonna happen. If we can all keep the traffic at that speed I  think things are gonna work out fine.”

Some of the changes Flanders would like to see are LED lights added to the crosswalk, reducing the pavement width to one lane when entering and leaving the neighborhood, and redesigned driveways.

“We can average during the summer 300 to 350 people a day, and then on the wintertime over 1,000 people. Most of the crashes we’ve had involve a fence being torn up or the palm trees being hit, but outside of that fortunately no one has been hurt, and that’s what we’re trying to prevent,” said Flanders.
