Florida’s best BMX riders prepare to compete in Punta Gorda
PUNTA GORDA, Fla.– Close to a thousand of the states best BMX riders are set to compete this weekend in Punta Gorda as the area continues to become a hot bed for the sport.
The sound of the starting gate falling will once again welcome the best riders in the state to Charlotte BMX for the USA BMX Florida State Championship Series.
“It’s special and it is really cool to see everybody else here enjoying this facility that we all have,” Charlotte BMX rider Chad Romans said.
On the heels of the tracks success, in October with the Sunshine State Nationals Track President and former Olympian Amanda Carr was full go to showcase her track and her sport.
“The opportunities that the sport gave me obviously going to compete on the Olympic stage is something that I could never spend enough hours here to give back what this place gave me and my family,” Carr said.
That’s the key word for the sport and the track- family.
Carr can’t stress the family atmosphere enough and this weekend with entire families traveling for the event it is estimated to bring in one million dollars in economic support for Charlotte County.
“I think that is one thing that is special about a BMX track is that it is a family event,” Sports Business Development Director for Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach Sean Walter said.
It will be a unique event everyone in the family can get involved in.
“So you are going to see riders that are from three years old all the way up to 60+,” Carr said. “You are going to have all ages and all skill levels and all genders racing.”
So if you have never seen a BMX event before or never been on a racing bike, there is no better time than this weekend.
“I think that you just kind of have to watch it for yourself. It is really cool to watch you get to see people go really fast, rub elbows and have fun,” Romans said.
“If someone is standing out here and they are going ‘I can’t do that’ I promise you that you can do it and I promise you that I can get you around the track in 20 minutes if you just give me that time,” Carr said.
The opening ceremonies will be Saturday at 11:15 a.m. with racing starting at 11:30 and again at 9 AM on Sunday.
