Florida’s Memorial Day gas prices were lower than 2018 holiday levels

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Gas prices in Florida on Memorial Day averages $2.86 per gallon.

Although the state average was higher than the last two years, it was 5 cents less than what drivers paid in Florida during the 2018 holiday weekend.

Gas prices in the Sunshine State have been on the decline over the last two weeks, dropping nearly 3 cents. The state average is now 7 cents more than a month ago and nearly a dollar per gallon more than this time last year.

“Gas prices are relatively stagnant as we enter the start of the busy summer driving season,” Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA said. “Although pump prices normally increase in the spring and decline in the fall, summertime gas prices are often volatile and unpredictable. One big reason for that is hurricane season. If a hurricane strikes the Gulf Coast refinery region, pump prices can rise due to concerns about gasoline supplies.”

The least expensive gas prices were found in Punta Gorda ($2.78), Orlando ($2.80), Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater ($2.81). The highest price per gallon were in Panama City ($3.04), West Palm Beach-Boca Raton ($3.00), Tallahassee ($2.97).
