Forecast: Dry, windy weather prevails

NBC2 Fire Alert extended through Sunday

High fire danger continues as dry conditions persist across the area.

Our Sunday is shaping up similarly to Saturday. Our humidity remains low, winds remain breezy, and rain chances are nearly non-existent. There will be a few small changes in our weather, but they’re pretty subtle. The first is that our winds are expected to be a touch calmer. Yesterday sustained winds were up to 20 miles per hour, with gusts closer to 30. Winds today will be closer to 10-15 miles per hour. We will still have gusts up to 20 miles per hour, but thankfully our winds are starting to calm down.

We still have a very high risk for brush fires today, because even 15 miles per hour can easily get a fire out of control. One positive of winds calming down, is our seabreeze will have the opportunity to set up closer to the coast. We still have dry air in place, so unfortunately any showers that develop on the seabreeze will be short-lived with only light rain.

By the middle of the week high temperatures will climb into the middle 90s, with rain chances still very low as a big area of high pressure settles over Florida. By next weekend, that high pressure will start to break down and our tropical moisture will slowly start to push back into Florida, creating the opportunity for showers and storms, just in time for Memorial Day Weekend. We’re all waiting with bated breath at this point for rain, so count on NBC2 to keep you updated on when rainy season finally shows up to the party.
