Fort Myers City Council members discuss combining law enforcement agencies

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A discussion to combine law enforcement agencies in Fort Myers brought dozens of people to speak in support of keeping the Fort Myers Police Department as it is.

More than 100 supporters of the Fort Myers Police Department demonstrated at Monday’s City Council meeting.

One city council member proposed having the Lee County Sheriff’s Office take over policing in Fort Myers.

Councilman Fred Burson added the item to Monday’s agenda after learning that Chief Derrick Diggs applied for a job at the Columbus Police Department.

Burson said he has no intent to harm individual officers by suggesting LCSO take over.

Union representatives said approaching the idea with a council discussion is irresponsible and caused stress for the city’s officers.
