Fort Myers man suffered severe burns on his feet from hot asphalt

FORT MYERS, FLA.– A Fort Myers man got an unfortunate reminder of how hot asphalt can get around Florida in the summer when he suffered severe burns on his feet.

Rob Whyte was preparing to step in the water to dock his boat at the Punta Rassa Boat Ramp in Lee County earlier this month after a fishing tournament.

To keep everything dry, he removed his shoes and socks then left them on the boat.

He said his grave mistake came when he forgot where he parked his truck. He found himself standing in the middle of the parking lot with nowhere to go while his toes toasted.

“I was on the asphalt for two minutes or less and it really destroyed the bottom of my feet,” said Whyte.

Once he finally reached his truck, he felt a strange sensation.

“When I got back to the truck, my feet were literally sliding in my own skin,” Whyte said.

To receive the most extensive care, Whyte and his wife were referred to a burn unit in Miami.

They raced to the other side of the state where Rob underwent surgery early the next morning. He suffered second degree burns on 35% of his foot.

Doctors used cadaver skin to begin the healing process.

“I’ve broken my sternum and my collar bone but none of them compare to the pain I felt in my feet,” said Whyte.

He is on the mend and back on his feet.

Whyte admitted he feels silly for not wearing shoes on the pavement but he’s taking it as a lesson learned. He’s urging everyone to be mindful for their own sake and the sake of their pets as Southwest Florida only continues heating up this summer.

“If you won’t walk on it barefoot, don’t walk your dog or your kids on it barefoot,” said Whyte.
