Fort Myers police work to keep locals safe as bar crowds increase

FORT MYERS, Fla.– Friday’s nice weather, large bar crowd and Music Walk event made for the perfect night to toss one back and hit downtown Fort Myers.

“Downtown’s been busier than normal, I think,” said bar owner Raimond Aulen.

He owns three bars in the downtown area: The Indigo Room, The 86 Room and The Edge Nightclub.

“We’ve been on a roll,” said Aulen.

In April, Fort Myers Police officers were captured on camera trying to disperse a massive crowd that was fighting in the street.

“When we first started becoming busy and back to normal it seemed to be a little chaotic,” said Aulen.

On Friday, FMPD was out on foot to keep an eye on the crowds.

“There’s four doing a detail and there’s officers that are also on the road and are local and are ready to help when we need,” said Officer Tori Johnston with Fort Myers Police. “People love our presence and we’re just helping out the best we can.”

It’s no small task for the officers now that big crowds are back.

“It could be as many as a few thousand people that are going to come and go,” said Aulen.

While he’s providing the fun, FMPD will continue providing the safety.
