Inseparable friendship formed in Army leads to emotional airport reunion

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Only a few months ago, Jami Aguayo and Travis Livingston were strangers. Now they consider each other best friends.

Their friendship led to an emotional reunion at Southwest Florida International Airport last month (watch the video above to see the moment unfold).

Aguayo and Livingston served in the U.S. Army alongside each other in northern Syria. For months they battled extreme challenges together, including spending 19 days in the desert without power.

Each Tuesday they would send each other special messages via video to let each other know they were one week closer to heading back home.

Then, this past October, Livingston’s 20-month old son died from drowning.

“All [Jami] did was come up to my bed and put her arm around me,” Livingston said. “That’s when I knew she was my best friend.”

When Aguayo returned home from overseas, Livingston welcomed her back at the airport. “I felt like we were hugging together for an hour.”

Even while back home and with families of their own, Livingston and Aguayo continue to see each other on a regular basis.

“The toughest situations in life make you closer with those that are around you,” Livingston said.
