Officials warn holes left on Captiva beach endanger wildlife

CAPTIVA, Fla.–Beachcombers on Captiva came across large three-foot-deep holes the sand right off the beach, on Friday morning.

Locals said it’s common to see holes made by children playing in the sand but scientists warn it can create a hazard for both humans and wildlife.

Two holes were spotted near Alison Hagerup Beach Park.

“Holes do pose a serious threat to nesting turtles because they can fall inside and get trapped inside of them. Turtles can only move forward, they can’t move in reverse, so it’s really hard for them to get out of the hole once they are in there.” said Kelly Sloan from the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation.

The holes don’t only cause a problem for animals.

“We definitely hear reports of people falling in the holes at night when they cant see them,” Sloan said.

Officials ask that you remember to fill in holes and knock over sandcastles after a day at the beach.
