Officials work to improve access to broadband, internet speeds in Cape Coral

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The City of Cape Coral is working to improve access to broadband and improve internet speeds in areas like north of Pine Island Road.

Currently, many residents have limited access or have internet access with slow speeds, making it difficult to do basic tasks, like work from home or surf the internet.

“I would be absolutely ecstatic if I didn’t have to worry about that,” said Linda Stevens, the secretary of the Northwest Cape Coral Neighborhood Association. “I would love to be able to come over here to my computer, click on something, and actually have it open in an instant rather than sitting there and waiting.”

A city spokesperson said city staff has received direction from Council to seek requests for proposals in a formal process that allows interested companies a chance to partner with the City to improve internet speeds. The process takes about six to eight months to complete before a decision to move forward can be made.

The spokesperson said they cannot simply select a company because the proposal process is governed by state laws and city ordinances and must take place before any decisions can be made.

The City said costs to improve internet speeds have not been determined, but would likely be in the millions.
