Red tide bloom found on South Seas Plantation Beach on Captiva Island

CAPTIVA ISLAND, Fla. – A red tide bloom has been found near South Seas Plantation Beach access on Captiva.

The Florida Department of Health in Lee County said some may have mild and short-lived respiratory symptoms such as eye, nose, and throat irritation similar to cold symptoms. People with breathing problems such as asthma might experience more severe symptoms.

Symptoms usually go away after heading inside or leaving the area, according to local health officials. FDOH recommends that people experiencing symptoms stay away from the beach or go into an air-conditioned space.

Beachgoers should not swim around dead fish and keep animals away from the water, sea foam, and dead sea life, health officials said. People in the area should also not harvest or eat molluscan shellfish and distressed or dead fish from South Seas Plantation Beach.

Health officials suggest residents living near the beach close their windows and run the air conditioner. For more red tide locations, click here.
