Red tide loses intensity as it lingers off SWFL’s coast

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – Red tide is lingering off the Southwest Florida coast, but the toxic water is losing intensity.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has reported low to medium concentrations from Collier County north to Charlotte County. Earlier this week, they tested and found high concentrations of red tide near Bonita Beach.

Right now, very low amounts are surrounding the Sanibel Causeway and Lighthouse Beach. People are packing the sand for the long weekend.

The water is tropical-looking, with blue and green water sitting in the Gulf. The clear water has people hoping it will stick around.

All the people are a big boost for businesses on the island. Colony Inn Manager Michelle Mathews said they need the crowd to help recover from the pandemic.

“It’s been everything that people are now feeling comfortable enough to travel and come here.”
