Blue-green algae found at Franklin Locks, health alert issued

ALVA, Fla. — Toxic blue-green algae has been detected in the water of the Franklin Locks and local officials have issued a health alert. A sample of water taken from the Franklin Locks on June 7 came back positive for blue-green algae. Blue-green algae are a type of bacteria that can be found in Florida’s freshwater environments. The algae blooms can spread rapidly and will discolor water and even produce floating mats that smell foul. FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. – Fort Myers Beach is gearing up for its annual Fourth of July firework celebration. According to officials with Fort Myers Beach, the show begins at 9 p.m. and is expected to last for 20 minutes. Traffic will be heavy as well as the demand for parking in the downtown, Times Square, and Pier areas. CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — Surveillance cameras caught two candle thieves stealing 3-wick candles from a retail store in Charlotte County. Security footage shows the thieves casually placing multiple candles into their bags directly in front of store employees. Soon after, the duo leaves the store without paying for their haul. Cape Coral man thrown from car killed when vehicle flips on top of him

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A 57-year-old Cape Coral man died in a single-car crash on Diplomat Parkway east on Thursday, officials said. Officers with the Cape Coral Police Department arrived at the crash around 3:40 p.m. Humberto Munoz was speeding down Diplomat Parkway and was headed towards a curve in the road, a witness who saw the crash said. Lee County officials to accept millions for homelessness relief

LEE COUNTY, Fla.– The Lee County Board of Commissioners will vote if they will accept different state and federal grants on the morning of June 15. Lee County officials are set to accept over $3 million dollars for homelessness relief. All of the funds will go towards housing and resources for homeless citizens in the county. Experts say lack of rain leads to less lovebugs this season

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – A lack of rain this year has led to a lack of a lovebug season, according to experts. CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — The identity of a murder victim has been revealed 27 years after their death thanks to modern DNA technology. The victim who was known for years as John Doe #1 has now been identified as Gerald (Jerry) Lombard.
