Why This Is Not Like 2008 Again

During the Great Recession, just over a decade ago, the financial systems the world depended on started to collapse. It created a panic that drove some large companies out of business (ex. Lehman Brothers) and many more into bankruptcy. The financial crisis that accompanied the current pandemic caused hardship to certain industries and hurt many small businesses. However, it hasn’t rattled the world economy. It seems that a year later, things are slowly getting back to normal for many companies. Why is there a drastic difference between 2008 and now? In a post from RealtyTrac, they explain: “We...

Forecast: More heat with only a few evening storms

June is typically the wettest month of the year for Southwest Florida, but it certainly hasn’t played out that way this week.  Rain chances will be very isolated again this afternoon, which means the summer heat will be front and center.  Highs will range from 92-95 this afternoon, but the heat index will be as high as 100 degrees during the peak heating of the day.  Any showers and storms that develop for the rest of today should be focused around the late evening hours before the area turns dry tonight.  Overall, rain chances stay limited through the end of the week, although...

Water advisory issued in Cape Coral, officials consider one-day watering schedule

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Cape Coral city officials are asking residents to do their part in water conservation. A new advisory has been put in place as canal levels in the city continue to sink. If people don’t pay attention to how much water they use and conditions don’t improve, the city will mandate a one-day watering schedule. More than 4,000 illegal watering violations have been issued since the start of dry season. High usage and illegal watering contribute to decreased irrigation pressures. An adequate supply of irrigation water is needed for the more than 800 fire hydrants...

Fort Myers’ Olivia McMurray set to swim at Olympic Trials

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Come Sunday, Fort Myers High School graduate Olivia McMurray will be swimming in a pool much larger than the one she is used to practicing in at Cypress Lake High School.  That’s because two years after qualifying, McMurrary will finally get to swim in the U.S. Olympic Trials.  “It’s really surreal,” said Olivia. “It’s something that I’ve always dreamed of since I was a little age group swimmer at eight or nine (years old).” Thursday, the eight-time Florida high school state champion and her coach, Rob Pellicer,...

Cape Coral man claims to have spotted ‘UFO’

CAPE CORAL, Fl. — A mysterious object was spotted flying in the sky over Cape Coral on Tuesday evening.  The man who saw it said at one point the aircraft was hovering right over his car, like they were ready to shine a beam down on him, trying to absorb him into what he calls a UFO.  Jose Carrodegua was on his way home from work when he saw the first of two UFO’s. He says it’s like nothing he’s ever seen before.  “The light began to separate into two and then come back together,” said Carrodegua. Just five minutes away on Santa Barbara Blvd. he took pictures of...

Cape Coral doctor offers medical marijuana discount as COVID-19 vaccine incentive

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Businesses around the US are offering people incentives to get the COVID-19 vaccine, and the marijuana business is not excluded. One business in Cape Coral is copying the model in hopes of getting more people around Southwest Florida vaccinated. Companies like Krispy Kreme and brands like Samuel Adams have offered their products for free or at a discount, so Dr. Barton Hershfield decided he would try the same thing. “We wanted to help get things back to normal safely,” said Hershfield. Dr. Hershfield works at the Medical Cannabis Physicians of Southwest...

Cape Coral nurse & patient bond over bikes, help give thousands away

When Robert Hippert suffered a heart attack three years ago, he left Cape Coral Hospital with both a healthy heart and a happy one.  Robert has spent 17 years giving away bikes to those who are veterans, homeless or in recovery. He calls it his “Bicycle Ministry”. During his hospital stay, Robert met nurse Michele Larson, who has had a hobby of fixing old bikes since the age of 12. “I told him that I think God put us together,” Michele said.  After that chance encounter, the two teamed up to help ramp up Robert’s bike giveaway efforts.
