Forecast: Dry weather continues, hope for rainy season on the horizon

Our dry weather continues for another day Southwest Florida. While the less humid air is very refreshing, it’s preventing any significant chance for rain. So once again we will have high temperatures climb into the low and middle 90s, with no chance for rain. The dry, warm pattern will persist for the much of the week, but there is hope on the horizon! By the start of Memorial Day Weekend moisture will return to bring rain chances, which should linger into early next week! Until the rain arrives, we have yet another Fire Alert in place across Southwest Florida, with another possible...

Forecast: Dry weather pattern remains in place

Though late May can sometimes be a humid and stormy time of year in South Florida, the next few days feature a weather forecast more typical of mid-dry season. This means minimal rain chances and relatively low humidity combining to keep the region’s wildfire threat relatively high. With this in mind, be sure to do your part and mitigate the risk of any new fires. Use care when grilling outside and mowing the lawn. Don’t park cars in grassy areas and be cautious of where you drive ATVs. If you own a truck, make sure chains are tied up properly and if you are a smoker do...

Forecast: Dry, windy weather prevails

NBC2 Fire Alert extended through Sunday High fire danger continues as dry conditions persist across the area. Our Sunday is shaping up similarly to Saturday. Our humidity remains low, winds remain breezy, and rain chances are nearly non-existent. There will be a few small changes in our weather, but they’re pretty subtle. The first is that our winds are expected to be a touch calmer. Yesterday sustained winds were up to 20 miles per hour, with gusts closer to 30. Winds today will be closer to 10-15 miles per hour. We will still have gusts up to 20 miles per hour, but thankfully...

Forecast: Staying windy and dry Friday

NBC2 Fire Alert extended through Saturday Our windy weather pattern continues today, and combined with the hot dry air this afternoon, the fire danger remains very high for Southwest Florida.  The change in the overall fire danger today is the air will be slightly less humid, which makes it more comfortable outside but also elevates the fire danger.  The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Team continues the FIRE ALERT today and Saturday.  The vast majority of brush fires are man made, so be sure to keep doing what you can to lessen the chance of something starting. Don’t...

Second area of interest emerges in the Gulf of Mexico

There is a new, second area to watch in the tropics and this one is about 800 miles to our west. A disturbance in the western Gulf of Mexico, associated with a surface low pressure, is producing clouds and thunderstorms. Before this disturbance moves onshore into SE Texas or Louisiana sometime Friday, there is a small window of opportunity for marginal development. Chances for development are quite slim at 20 percent.  Regardless of development, heavy rainfall with the potential for flooding is possible. There are no threats to Florida at this time.  The post Second area of interest emerges...

‘Ana’ expected to form in the Atlantic

The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking Team continues to monitor an area of low pressure in the Atlantic, which is showing signs of becoming better organized and could develop into Subtropical Storm Ana in the next two days. The area to watch is currently a non-tropical system about 800 miles east of Bermuda. The National Hurricane Center now gives the system a 70% chance of developing in the next two days and a 90% chance of developing in the next 5 days. The good news is the storm will stay out to sea and will not be a threat to Florida or the U.S. mainland. Likely soon-to-be Ana will make...

Forecast: Winds ramp up Thursday; fire danger remains high

NBC2’s Fire Alert continues for Thursday – Conditions stay the same, so does the fire danger. Today has the ingredients for a pretty bad hair day thanks to a strong easterly breeze ramping up through the day.  Winds will range from 15-25 mph with some gusts above 30. The breeze will help keep temperatures feeling slightly cooler, but there’s also a big concern with the windy weather elevating the fire risk. Considering the air and soil are also relatively dry, most of Southwest Florida is under a very high fire danger, which will likely continue for the remainder of the...

Forecast: Dry & breezy weather continues

Fire danger remains elevated across SWFL for the end of the week as little changes in the overall pattern. After a mostly cloudy day today, more sunshine will return for the end of the week, as high pressure from the Atlantic noses in from the northeast. This high will suppress any rain chances into the weekend and sustain the brisk east winds from the last few days.  Humidity also stays low with dew points only in the low 60s through the start of next week. With drying brush, low humidity, and breezy conditions continuing, fire dangers will stay elevated across the area. Rain chances...

First Area to watch in the tropics for 2021

And so it begins! The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Team is tracking the first area of interest in the Atlantic Basin for the 2021 Hurricane Season, less than two weeks before the official start. The area to watch is a non-tropical area of low pressure currently northeast of Bermuda, and only has a 20% chance for development over the next five days. If it does manage to develop into an area to watch, it will be a subtropical system, and remain out to sea. If it strengthens enough into a Subtropical Storm, the first name on the list is Ana. Early forecasts indicate that Hurricane Season...
