The future of how LeeWay collects tolls will be decided Tuesday

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The coronavirus pandemic changed a lot of things, including how we travel around our community.

Removing toll booth attendants was an early move by community leaders in an attempt to help slow the spread of COVID-19. But now, even as more people are vaccinated against COVID, some Lee County Commissioners want to discuss keeping the tolls electronic.

County officials have said that travel times have decreased since switching to an entirely electronic model.

“You don’t have to scramble for your change or look through your purse, you don’t have to go through all that,” Angelia Miller, a Cape Coral resident, said. “The electronic you get to just whiz through.”

Also, not stopping to give cash to attendants enhances driver and employee safety, officials said.

County staff will discuss the future of tolls in Lee County on Tuesday afternoon. Some commissioners will recommend going back to the way tolls worked before the pandemic started, reinstating a $3 fee for motorists without a LeeWay Transponder.
