Waste Pro continues to hire new workers in an effort to get back on schedule

Waste Pro held a hiring event on Tuesday to fill multiple positions, including drivers, helpers and technicians.

Waste Pro Division Manager Bill Jones said 55 people attended the job fair, making it their most attended job fair in 2021.

“We’re really making headway, we’re excited about that,” Jones said. “We are generally back on schedule.”

Waste Pro has been working to hire more people after being understaffed and getting behind on bulk-item pickups in Cape Coral. Recently, the company hired eight new people.

“I think we are getting much more creative in how we attract applicants and what we look for in applicants,” Jones said.

In March, the City of Cape Coral received 923 missed pickup complaints and in April that number rose to 1,190. A City spokesperson said recently they are getting fewer complaints about missed pick-ups.

The city is also no longer helping Waste Pro with horticulture pick-ups.

“We do still have subcontractors helping us with bulk collection and we hope to be back on schedule with our bulk collection within the next few weeks,” Jones said.

Waste Pro said qualified applicants are eligible for a gas gift card, and once hired, employees are eligible for retention and referral bonuses up to $3,000. Additionally, drivers and helpers who are hired and go three years without accidents, injuries or property damage are eligible to earn a $5,000- $10,000 safety award.

The full-service drop-off location at City Hall will be closed on Saturday, May 29 due to the holiday and the full-service drop-off location at Cultural Park Theater will be closed on Monday, May 31 in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.

The self-service locations at the Northwest Softball Complex, Festival Park, and the Pelican Baseball Complex will remain open from dawn to dusk.
