Fire crews use former Bonita Springs greyhound race track for training

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. – The Old Greyhound Race track in Bonita Springs may be stripped down to its bones, but fire crews are finding lessons in what’s left of the track.

“More than anything it’s having the opportunity to train at a venue like this, this is as real as it gets,” said Shane Sibert, SWFL Urban Search & Rescue Program Manager.

On Sunday, Sibert’s team took advantage of all of the rubble & scraps left behind since the track officially closed on May 3, 2020.

They were able to run through and practice with different scenarios such as breaching through floors & even cutting with torches and saws.

“We’ve been trying to get our skills in tact because it’s one of those things that if you don’t use it you’ll lose it but we’ve been getting practice so in a real we’re ready to help the community,” said Pedro Olivia Jr.

12 different agencies were there in total, working & learning together to save lives.

“They build confidence because they’ll always go back. If we’re actually deployed in an emergency or disaster event, now they’re going to go back and revert to training,” said Sibert
