Shut off & lock your cars… or face a fine

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Many people leave their vehicles running and unattended, which can lead to it being burglarized and even stolen, officials said.

Although this seems like common sense to some people, others will often leave their cars unlocked, with a door open, or leave the windows down, officers with the Cape Coral Police Department said.

As more vehicles are stolen, insurance rates will increase for everyone, officers said.

Police are urging people to turn off their cars and lock them to reduce preventable crimes.

“Criminals are looking for the quickest and easiest crimes with the highest reward,” a CCPD spokesperson said. “Don’t make it easy for criminals.”

If you’re caught leaving a vehicle unattended without shutting off the engine and removing the key, you face a fine of $113.00.
