Forecast: Hot, steamy weekend with isolated storms

The good news is we’ve got some rain back in the forecast today. The bad news is for those who could really use more rain, our rain chances will stay fairly isolated and hit-or-miss.  This morning, expect a warm, steamy start with sunshine and temperatures approaching 90 by the lunch hour.  A few spots of rain will bubble up over Lee, Collier and Charlotte County early in the afternoon, but as winds shift from west to east, the storms that form will favor inland areas during the mid to late afternoon.  If you have evening plans outdoors, a few showers will still be possible...

Florida bans ‘critical race theory’ from public school classrooms

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida’s state Board of Education banned “critical race theory” from public school classrooms Thursday, adopting new rules it said would shield schoolchildren from curricula that could “distort historical events.” Florida’s move was widely expected as a national debate intensifies about how race should be used as a lens in classrooms to examine the country’s tumultuous history, The Associated Press reports. Gov. Ron DeSantis appeared by video at the top of the board’s meeting, urging its members, many of whom he appointed, to adopt the new measures he asserted would...

Experts say lack of rain leads to less lovebugs this season

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – A lack of rain this year has led to a lack of a lovebug season, according to experts. FGCU Entomologist Dr. Joyce Fassbender said that lovebugs’ big season is typically from the middle of April until about the middle to the end of May. “Their young actually require really moist soils in order for the eggs to develop, for the larvae to develop, and then for them to become adults,” said Dr. Fassbender. “If we have a drought or just a really dry, late spring, then they’re not going to be able to do that.” That’s what we’ve...

Why prices are rising – and when they could go back down

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Lately, it seems like just about everything we buy is costing us more. For starters, gas prices have hit nearly $3 per gallon in Fort Myers. “I like to shop around, but at the same time you have to accept that if you need the gas, you gotta get the gas,” Daniel Bevarly said while at the pump.  The price of a vehicle itself is also on the rise. Analysts say used car prices in particular are up about 20% over the past year.   Price hikes have also hit grocery stores — specifically the meal coolers. The USDA says beef prices are up 10%...
