Thieves steal convertor off Lee County United Way truck

LEE COUNTY, Fla.– Hannah Pelle, the Vice President for United Way in Lee County, does everything she can to help families in need. 

“Everyday we are making a difference. It makes you feel good,” Pelle said. “Our organizations provides funding to over 100 nonprofits throughout the community.”

Thieves stole the organizations Catalytic converter of their only truck, stopping them from transporting supplies to struggling families.

“We’re in a real tight spot, Wednesday morning our staff went to start up the truck and realized there was a huge problem.” She said. 

Pelle said the thieves used an electric hacksaw to remove the converter from their truck. It’s the part of the car that lowers emissions.

Allan Smith from Terry Wynter Auto Service says it’s a common car component targeted by thieves. 

“They slide in, zap zap, converter drops and they are off in about 2 minutes,” Smith explained.

Because of the high price of some metals, one convertor can fetch hundreds of dollars if resold. The piece costs even more to replace, which United Way said they are already looking into.
