Florida DEO to withdraw from federal unemployment program, ending $300 weekly payments

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) will be withdrawing from the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program, ending the $300 weekly supplemental unemployment payments for claimants. The withdrawal is effective June 26, 2021. The DEO released a statement on Monday saying the decision to end its participation in the program came after April’s labor statistics showed that total private-sector employment increased by 18,800 jobs and more than 460,000 online job postings became available throughout the state. Family loses home in massive Golden Gate Estates brush fire

GOLDEN GATE ESTATES, Fla. – A family is heartbroken and restless, following the aftermath of a brush fire that ignited on 14th Avenue near DeSoto Boulevard Saturday afternoon. “This is what we’re left with, nothing! Golden Gate Estates brush fire reaches 1,200 acres as crews battle the blaze

GOLDEN GATE ESTATES, Fla. – The brush fire in Golden Gate Estates reached 1,200 acres and is 20% contained as of Sunday morning as fire crews continue to extinguish the flames. Officials with the Florida Forestry Service said one home was completely destroyed by the fire and three others were damaged. The brush fire ignited on 14th Avenue near DeSoto Boulevard Saturday afternoon. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office is leading voluntary evacuation efforts in the area. GOLDEN GATE ESTATES, Fla. – A 50-acre brush fire sparked on 14th Avenue near DeSoto Boulevard in Golden Gate Estates. The Florida Forest Service along with Greater Naples fire crews are responding to the brush fire. Technology could be used to respond to Lee County algae blooms

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Lee County confirmed a contract with a vendor that could respond to algae blooms if they get bad this year is expected to go before the board of commissioners next month. In 2018, the county partnered with AECOM for a pilot program. Crews launched machines into about a dozen canals hit hard by algae in North Fort Myers and Cape Coral. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection granted the county more than $2 million in emergency funds to pay for it. COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – A 300-acre brush fire is burning near Dove Tree Street in Golden Gate Estates, according to the Florida Forest Service. Team of Charlotte County detectives take on cold case murders

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. – Once a murder case goes cold it can be nearly impossible to solve. But the three-man team in Charlotte county said they’ll talk to anyone and go anywhere to find answers. Endangered sea turtle dies from suspected red tide poisoning

CHARLOTTE HARBOR, Fla. – A red tide bloom off our coast is suspected to be responsible for the death of the world’s smallest and most endangered sea turtle. On May 14, a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle was admitted to CROW after it was rescued in Charlotte Harbor, according to the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation. The turtle was found floating, breathing strangely, and acting like something was stuck in its mouth. Veterinarians suspected red tide poisoning. CAPE CORAL, Fla. — May is National Water Safety Month and parents are taking steps to prevent drowning deaths in Florida.
